This 1937 advert recommends photography as a profitable business or fascinating hobby.
I think that's still true though the pros I speak to tell me making our hobby a profitable business gets more difficult. It seems that like all other industries, you as a photographer have to have your own unique angle (perspective?) or add more to the experience than just the image.
