This Friday at KPS ...

Kingswood Photographic Society is absolutely delighted to welcome for the first time, Simon Caplan LRPS, as their speaker on 31st January giving an illustrated talk entitled A Photographic Exploration of Britain’s Heritage Crafts.

Over the past three years, Downend-based photographer Simon Caplan LRPS has been exploring the work of some of Britain’s most traditional craftspeople and food artisans – part of a deliberate attempt to develop his portrait photography skills, widen his creative and technical palette and a build a more comprehensive portfolio.

In his talk, Simon will share some of the challenges involved in setting up and creating such portraits – particularly when engaging with busy people who are protective of the image of their craft and often work in cramped and badly lit environments.

A panel of images drawn from this series formed Simon’s successful submission for his Licentiateship of the RPS and his growing reputation for environmental portraiture has this year helped him take the first steps into the professional photography world – securing his first major paid commission from the Heritage Crafts Association.

Simon also has a well established reputation for his colourful semi-abstract
found still life images which make the ordinary often seem extraordinary – and has exhibited these extensively across Bristol in recent years. During the evening he will introduce club members to this very different side of his photography as well as sharing some of his other recent work.

More of Simon’s work can be seen online at www.simoncaplanphotography.co.uk or on www.flickr.com/photos/simoncaplan, from which you’ll see why this promises to be interesting evening.  We hope to see you there.

Kingswood PS meet Fridays from 7.30pm to 9.30pm at St Barnabas Church Hall, Warmley, Bristol BS30 5JJ.  Visitors are most welcome and the cost for this evening is £3.00.
