This Friday at KPS ...

Kingswood Photographic Society is absolutely delighted to welcome Linda Gibbs MPAGB, AV-AFIAP & Edgar Gibbs FRPS, MPAGB, AV-AFIAP as their speakers on Friday, 16th August, giving their talk, The Magic Behind the Lantern.

Edgar and Linda Gibbs are members of Gwynfa Camera Club, just north of Cardiff, South Wales, UK, and it was there that they saw their first Audio Visual (AV) show back in the early 1980s.  Taken with the use of light and images blending together with a soundtrack, they soon became active members of the South Wales Royal Photographic Society’s AV Group. After a couple of years developing their AV skills, they were asked to take over the running of the Group, which they ran successfully for 10 years, before being invited to become members of the organising Committee of the Royal Photographic Society (RPS) International AV Festival – which they undertook for four years.  In the meantime they further broadened their horizons by attending and subsequently achieving acceptances and awards at National and International AV Festivals, as well as organising and participating in RPS AV Group AV days.  They are regular speakers on the AV lecture circuit both in Wales and England

They are both on the PAGB AV Judges List, judging together and independently, both national and international competitions.  They have been judges for the Irish Photographic Federation AV Championships, where they also presented their work and gave a lecture on the use of sound in AV.  They were members of the judging panel for the Photographic Society of Southern Africa’s National AV Salon, and have also judged and shown their work at the Northern Ireland Photographic Association’s AV Festival.

As well as holding a Fellowship in AV from the RPS, Edgar has been a member of the Panel which receives and considers submissions for distinction awards in AV from the RPS.  In October 2012 both Linda and Edgar were awarded a Master in AV from the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain.  Additionally, they have successfully gained distinctions (Artiste) from the International Federation of Photographic Art, also in AV.

They strongly believe that both the images and sound are of equal importance and must be of the best quality.  As the photographer, Edgar found the transition to photography for AV a challenge, particularly as an AV sequence is not just about individual images but harmonising them with each other and the soundtrack.  Linda enjoys the production side of AV and uses her art college background to develop the creative aspects of their sequences, particularly the script writing element.

Their sequence Talbot House, won the silver medal and Best Soundtrack Award at the Adelaide International AV Festival, Australia, in 2007 and the Best Soundtrack Award at the RPS International AV Festival, Cirencester, UK, in 2008.  In 2011 Talbot House won the Multimedia Section of the British Amateur Recording Competition.  It was subsequently entered for the Multimedia Section of the International Amateur Recording Competition organised by the International Federation of Sound Hunters, where it also gained a first place.  Their most recent success has been with their sequence entitled
Thomas, which was awarded second place and the Silver RPS Medal at the RPS National Audio Visual Championships in September 2011, a further second place and the Irish Photographic Federation Silver Medal in the open section of the IPF AV Festival in October 2011, and another second place and a PAGB medal in the Great Northern AV Competition in December 2011.  In 2012 Thomas was awarded first place in the Multimedia Section of the British Amateur Recording Competition.

This promises to be an excellent evening so we hope to see you there.  Kingswood PS meet on Fridays at 7.30pm at St Barnabas Church Hall, Warmley, Bristol  BS30 5JJ.  Visitors are most welcome and the cost for this evening is £3.00.
