As part of his curated exhibition, All over the place!, William A. Ewing celebrates photography’s diversity by offering an interactive component during the New York Photo Festival that any photographer may participate in. He explains, “Everything is changing, how we take photographs, manipulate them, share them, store them—even how we pose for them. Our tools are mutating quickly, promising ever faster, clearer, brighter and cheaper pictures. Meanwhile telephones become cameras, desktop printers morph into mini-printing labs, and high-definition screens threaten to dislodge the venerable photographic print from gallery walls. And the eyes of the whole world are only a click away on the computer keyboard.”
By using special software developed by the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, anyone may submit a photograph via website that is stored in a server in Switzerland, sent to a projector located in The powerHouse Arena (37 Main Street, DUMBO, Brooklyn), and then broadcast for all Festival attendees to see. Simultaneously, as each image, labeled with the photographer’s name and home country, flashes on screen, a camera will photograph the projection in its environment as proof of its inclusion and emailed to each photographer.
