Purism and Purists and Photography

Articles on The New Modesty appear weekly in the media. We are all now supposed to recycle, spend list adopt new (old/) values of thrift, parsimony and piety. An adoption of the purest purism of all.

In photography we have practiced purism since its inception. Arguing at various times over whether photography is an art, pictorialism v realism, real v retouched, digital v film, photoshop v darkroom, ambient v artificial.

Yet… video is well, just video. It moves therefore it’s video. If it includes graphics or animation or photographs… it’s still video.

Is it time that purism in photography became outdated? Went the way of the buggywhip maker?
